Why This Function Exists

A trial cannot tell you everything
A study of six hundred people, run for a year, can tell you a great deal about how well a drug works. It cannot tell you about a reaction that happens once in twenty thousand exposures, or one that takes four years to appear. Those are found after approval, in the general population, or not at all.
Pharmacovigilance is the function that finds them. It is the reason a product's label changes years after launch, and the reason some products are withdrawn.
The job is not to be alarmed
A common misreading of this role is that it exists to worry. It does not. It exists to make individual reports countable, comparable and assessable, so that a real pattern can be separated from the noise of ordinary illness happening to people who happen to be taking a drug.
Most of the events you process will have nothing to do with the product. That is expected. A person on a cancer therapy will also break an ankle, catch influenza and develop reflux. The discipline is in recording all of it consistently enough that the one event that matters is visible against that background.
Where your work goes
What you produce leaves the company. An expedited report goes to regulators and to investigators running the study. An aggregate report becomes the basis on which an authority decides whether a product stays on the market as it is. A narrative you write may be read years later by someone assessing a class of drugs.
This is the practical reason the standards in this role are high. A case processed carelessly does not stay inside the company where somebody can catch it.
What follows
The rest of this course works through the path a single report takes: how it arrives, how it is triaged, how it is assessed for seriousness, causality and expectedness, what reporting clock it starts, how it is coded and written up, and how many such cases together become a signal.
