The Judgment They Are Relying On

Why the standard is this heavy

A participant in a trial accepts uncertainty and risk so that a question can be answered for people they will never meet.

Everything in this course exists to make sure that trade is honored: that they were properly informed, properly assessed, properly protected, and that their data can actually answer the question.

Your judgment is the part that cannot be automated

A coordinator can run a schedule. A system can flag a value. Deciding whether this participant is safe to continue, whether this event is related, whether this result matters, is a clinical judgment.

That is why the role requires a clinician and why it is delegated in writing.

The habits that carry it

Write it at the time. A record made later is a reconstruction.

Give the number. Adjectives do not survive translation or years.

Escalate on uncertainty. The cost of an unnecessary call is minutes.

Check your own dates. Nothing else on this list survives an expired delegation.

Report the deviation. Reported, it is managed. Found later, it is a finding about you.

Two duties, and one of them wins

Duty of care and duty to the protocol agree almost all the time. Where they do not, the participant comes first, and the departure is documented and reported.

Knowing that in advance is what lets you act quickly when it happens.

The record is what remains

You will not be in the room when somebody reads your assessment. Years later, a reviewer deciding whether a medicine is safe will read what you wrote and nothing else.

Write so that a stranger can see a reasonable clinician making a reasonable decision on the information available.

That is the whole of it.
